Hi Gerrit,

The tile panel was installed this week. We are absolutely delighted.

Many thanks
David

Dear Gerrit and Gillian,

I am sorry you beat me to it, as I had every intention of telling you the tiles are eventually up! This only happened on Friday, so very few people have seen them, but both David and I and the lady who is painting the kitchen for us are delighted and they look as good, if not better, than the photographs you sent us by e.mail.

David and I so enjoyed meeting you at the factory in Hermanus and seeing all the beautiful tiles you create. Although we had an idea what we wanted it was only with your expertise that it all came together.

Although we collected the tiles from you some weeks ago in Cape Town, I only unpacked them and laid them out last week, as I was apprehensive that they might get broken. None were broken because of your excellent packing, so now our lovely plaque is up on the wall above the hob.

As soon as the kitchen is complete I will take a photograph and send it to you.

Thank you for all your hard work. We much appreciate what you have created. We hope to see you again soon.

Yours sincerely,

Sally Milton

Working with appreciative clients like the Miltons are always a pleasure.

I can not wait to show you some of our new endeavours, but that is for a next post!

I have a dream to express myself in life size sculptural pieces. As a student it was the monumental, larger than life, possibilities that attracted my attention. To work on large ceramic pieces are a costly affair and demand thorough planning and excecution!

” The Layers of Age”

This piece, especially the surface, is not about “building up” but more about the “braking down” of the physical powers of man. The eyes are the keys to our past memories of youth and past experiences, and you might share in the desperation or wisdom captured in the old man’s eyes?

I suppose one can turn the face around and just imagine a girl taking a cold shower!

With my first dive from a high platform into the pool as a young boy I experienced shock when I touched the water,… where did my breath go?,… and the panic while scrambling up to the surface for air, will for ever stay with me!

These memories are recalled while viewing this face and was not part of the thought process while creating the face…or was it?

At the moment this ceramic bicycle is just ornamental and mostly decorative but this is part of a bigger picture. In due course images like this will be blended into art panels telling stories that most of us can relate with.

As a child I recall memories; of fear - cycling my first bike, of happiness - receiving each bicycle, of loss - when my first “big” bicycle was stolen, of adventure - exploring the far away and big unknown…..

As an adult the bicycles dumped in the chanels of Amsterdam, locked and left for ever on the rails next to the chanels, rusted , discarded, damaged…will amuse me forever! Sad, in a way, that this tool with wheels that we all used to take us places, to shop, to visit loved ones,…could be forgotten and neglected at the drop of a coin.

Hele was commissioned to hand paint this sheep, as a gift to a prominent wool farmer.

Is it not amazing how she could replicate the waxiness of the wool? The eyes glitter with life and it might just step from the frame of the arttile!

Pat Reid commissioned this panel for her beach house. With the first attempt we used terracotta with pressed seagulls as a one piece tile. This tile was left drying over a period of 8 weeks but cracked after the bisque fire.

With the second attempt we used 4 porcelain tiles, opting to carve the designs into the clay instead of pressing it as in the terracotta example.

I shall add a photo of the final installation to show why Pat is so proud of her house name.
