Pat Reid commissioned this panel for her beach house. With the first attempt we used terracotta with pressed seagulls as a one piece tile. This tile was left drying over a period of 8 weeks but cracked after the bisque fire.
With the second attempt we used 4 porcelain tiles, opting to carve the designs into the clay instead of pressing it as in the terracotta example.
I shall add a photo of the final installation to show why Pat is so proud of her house name.

Hi. I much prefer the second attempt. Using 4 tiles may have been necessary technically but no way detracts from the overall design. I’m sure Pat will be absolutely delighted when the sign is up on her beach house - look forward to seeing the photo.

Hallo Sean
The idea with the terracotta tile was to white glaze the rectangular background behind the letters and birds. Several layers of different blues on top of the white and as a border could have made for a pretty design as well.
But at the final analysis the second attempt would have been my favorite as well.
Thank you
Gerrit
