Can you imagine living and sharing in this room? This is my dream!roof-tiles.jpg

When traveling in a country, like Spain, with a culture rich in the embellishment of their homes and their use of decorative arts and craft, it is easy to overlook or not to recognize this type of embellishment.

The roof is definitely an area with great decorating potential, even in a modern society like ours today.

Even William Morris might approve the combination of Wall Paper and Handcarved Tiles with Birds

Posted under Ceramic art Tiles

William Morris once commented: “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”

Wall paper is a cheap alternative for expensive art tiles, however, these tiles could be very attractive if framed and used as a tool to accentuate the different properties of these two materials.

These luxuriously rich textured tiles were delicately carved by Hele’ , partly painted, then bisque fired, reworked and the final detail hand painted.

The techniques used here are time consuming which make these tiles very expensive. But the price paid will be little compared to the constant joy it will provide for centuries to come.

These initial 200 x 200mm art tiles will be the R&D period and in time we hope to achieve some larger scale work.

Our studio is intend on producing tiles of this quality, but as commodities and collectibles and not as a cheap decor alternative. These art tiles have soul and will endear most individuals who treasure well crafted, one of a kind products.detail.jpg

Birdwatching - The exitement is in the making of a handmade tile.

This is one of those moments, when certain actions fall impulsively into place.

I was in the process of creating under plates for some bowls I have made, and at the same time having some scrap white clay around. I punched and rolled the white clay into thin flat sheets. The pancakes were rolled up. Why?, It was the first idea, adhering the first roll onto the plate sparked the action to paste another roll. Two round objects, it does not matter where you notice it, it will always be interpreted as eyes! Cutting a mouth formulated the face and for the moment I was happy!

The red glaze is a symbol for passion, and the drama it creates when in contrast with black is intensely powerful.

The white eyes seems to be binoculars, searching the horizon for the unknown. The white face is the glaze before firing. I used the lines around the mouth to accentuate a possible message. The lines have vanished with the melting of the glaze, making the eyes more prominent in the red tile.

I like all three tiles, for different reasons. I enjoyed creating these at each stage, the dynamics happen so fast in succession, that the face actually create itself from what ever impulse surrounding “us” at that time.

This Ceramic Handmade Tile Panel was Designed by the Client to match their Royal Dalton Tea Cup

Posted under Kitchens Tiles

Mrs. Schroem provided us with rough sketches regarding the layout and placement of the flower arrangements to match the style and color of the cup.

The close match regarding the color and painting style can be appreciated when viewing the image below. For a richer and more interesting background a variety of creamish colors were formulated.

Due to a limited budget the client did not use our plain hand made tiles on the side walls but opted to use a matching mass produced tile. This panel will be the focal point in this kitchen, that is sure, and the framing of it by a machine made tile will accentuate it!

We hope to receive an image of the final installation soon. The website will be updated with more detailed images of this kitchen at a later time.

Temporary handmade tile inserts, with handpainted gold images, into travertine tiles.

Posted under Tips of the Trade

A client surprised me a while ago with this brilliant idea!

He bought two sets of seven, one with red and gold and the other with blue and gold, to use as inserts with his travertine tiles. The idea was to cut squares into the travertine and then to use “press stick” to adhere the tiles. After grouting the tiles it will present as being permanent but in actual fact his idea was to remove them again, replacing them with the next set of tiles!

The tiles were similar to these 100 x 100mm tiles.

Ole’ it’s Spanish - Our first hand made tile promotion

Posted under Promotions

HOT FOOT to - PROMOTIONS!

Most of our contracts are produced in duplicate. We are deadline driven and must at all times be prepared for the unexpected to happen, and most of the time it does! This is one of of the reasons why we are successful - we are proactive in dealing with the stress of delivering on what was promised. The panel in the picture is 30mm larger, compared to the one on promotion. The smaller one was produced first but remade to correspond with the parameters received from the kitchen designers.
